Why is Grounding important?

Some of you may be wondering like many of our Spectrum Electrical Services, Inc. customers, why is grounding electricity important? Here are 5 main reasons grounding electrical currents is important in your home or business:

1. Grounding protects against electrical overload. One of the most important reason to ground electricity is to protect your home, appliances, and all people from electrical surges. If lightning was to strike or the power surged in your dwelling for any reason, dangerously high voltage would be present. But if your electrical service is grounded, the excess electricity will go into the earth, rather than running high voltage through your system.
2. Grounding helps direct electricity. When your electrical system is grounded properly, it is easier for electricity to travel to where it belongs without interruptions.
3. Grounding stabilizes voltage levels. A grounded electrical system also makes it easier for the correct power to be distributed properly, saving your circuits from being overloaded and blown.
4. Earth is the best conductor. Grounding to a good conductor is important and that's why we ground to the earth. Electricity will always take the path of least resistance which the Earth provides, as opposed to a human body.
5. Grounding prevents damage, injury, and death. Properly grounding ensures safety to your appliances which are connected to your electrical system in a time of overload, as well as your home and life from fire caused by high voltage or electrocution.

If you have any questions or are unsure your electrical system is properly ground, give us a call!
