Safety - Around the Dock
We know here in NEPA, boating and docks in general on the lakes are a big hang out place in the summer, which will begin soon as kids are finishing their school year, and the summer weather and holidays are approaching. If you own a dock or are around anyone else's keep in mind that electricity and water are a lethal combination. Electrical shock drowning causes deaths in the US each year, as electric currents leak into the surrounding water, leaving the water energized and deadly to anyone which enters it.
A few ways to prevent energizing the water...
1. Always use GFCI's protection for receptacles on docks, floating piers, or any circuits that deliver electricity near the waters edge.
2. Never use frayed or damaged cords. Make sure all marine cords have a ground pin to prevent electrical shock.
3. If you suspect any issue with the power around the waters edge, immediately turn the power off at the panel and contact a licensed electrician to service your electricity.
Now you know why those no swimming signs are often hung around marinas and docks, not just because of injuries that could happen from boats, but also the chance of electrical shock from the surrounding water.
