Safety - Standby Generators

As we are in the season where rain and wind storms often cause power outages, requiring the use of portable power and causing many families to invest in standby generators, here at Spectrum Electrical Services, Inc. we want to make sure you're all ready for the power outages in a safe and orderly manner. Portable power sources such as standby generators are very handy to have as they can provide an alternative power source until the conventional power is restored, but keep in mind; like any other machine portable power sources can be dangerous.

Before you purchase a standby generator, you should be sure you clearly understand your electricity requirements to ensure the unit is the correct fit for your application. Also, when you are looking into which generator to purchase, make sure you're receiving a complete generator package or be sure you purchase an approved transfer switch and properly sized connector cords and plugs for this make and model. 

Carefully consider hiring a licensed electrician to do the work to ensure safety and thoroughness throughout the process of installation and maintenance.

Before installation it is always a good idea to go through the owners manual and understand all the components of the generator while also making sure everything is labeled properly before the need for use arises. If you have hired a licensed electrician to install your generator, be sure they include the grounding and bonding unit for the machine, as well as an electrical inspection for this addition if required by your local authorities.  

Remember, if you are using a fuel driven generator, proper ventilation is required to guard against carbon monoxide poisoning.
