Electrical Safety - Outdoor
As outdoor season is upon us, leaving many of us by the pool side or working in the gardens, we must be aware of the electrical safety hazards involved with those devices we view as convenient and easy, but the really pose great harm when used incorrectly or carelessly.
Some safety tips when performing lawn and garden work:
- Look Up and Look Out! Whether you're trimming tree branches, cleaning gutters, or inspecting the roof, there is a likely chance overhead power lines are running close to you and your tools. A good rule of thumb is to keep your ladder, pruner, etc. at least 3 meters away from any power source.
- Call Before You Dig! PA One Call is a great asset in helping you avoid hitting any buried utility runs when digging for your garden, decorative fence, or deck posts. Simply call 811 to have buried utility runs flagged out.
- Hydro Poles Are For Power Only! Although they may seem like the easiest place to place your yard sale or missing pet signs, satellite antennas, or clothes lines, these hydro poles are intended for running power only, and your usage of them can cause obstacles for maintenance personnel when poles need to be accessed.
Some safety tips for the pool side:
- Water and Electricity Don't Mix! All outdoor outlets, especially those around a pool area should be equipped with Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCI's) and weatherproof covers to prevent water and electricity meeting, causing dangerous electrical shocks.
- Electronics Stay Away! Always remember, the pool side is no place for ANY electrical equipment. Water can severely damage all electronic devices, and cause hazardous conditions when water meets them.
If you're looking to protect your pool side with weatherproof equipment, or run electricity to your new outdoor gazebo, give Spectrum Electrical Services, Inc. a call - we will be sure to help you get the most out of your tax return dollars, and get you well on your way to a safe and fun summer!
