Winter Electrical Safety Tips - Holiday Lights
Who doesn't love driving around this time of year and seeing towns come to life with holiday lights hung on buildings, sprawled in trees, and beaconing through house windows? But be warned, holiday lights can cause great fire hazards during this season as well if not cared for and put to use properly. Here are a few tips for fire safety this holiday season...
1. Before you hang holiday lights anywhere, be sure to inspect the wiring! Ensure there are no cuts or freys which could send a shooting spark large enough to start a structural fire.
2. Don't hang lights on a dry tree! Obviously a fire-resistant artificial tree is classified as the safest, but if you are a fan of fresh-cut Christmas trees, make sure you keep your tree well hydrated. Sparks or excess heat can turn your tree into a bonfire within minutes.
3. Consider upgrading to LED holiday lights! These produce much less heat reducing fire hazards, and they're energy efficient reducing your electricity cost to spread holiday cheer.
